YAG

The Yorkshire Alpaca Group is one of many regional group within the British Alpaca Society (BAS).
Our objective is to enable local alpaca owners and breeders the opportunity to meet and offer a flow of information throughout the alpaca network.

Membership

Membership of YAG is not restricted solely to members of BAS and all owners are welcome.
Do you own or would like to know more about alpacas? Why not join us?

Annual Membership Fee (Breeder) £25

Annual Fee (Non-Breeder) £10

Group Support

Alpaca owners and breeders are a friendly lot, and always pleased to share information with new members.
We provide courses through various members near you, why not give us a call?

Next AGM

The date of our AGM meeting via Zoom will be on Thursday 8th April 2021 at 7pm.

All members will be sent the link before hand, please contact Deborah if you do not receive one.

Our current Chairman Janet Brown and treasurer Sandra Samerson are stepping down after several years great service to the group.  They are very happy to help out and handover to any of our members who would consider taking on one these roles, so please if you would like to see the group continue and grow and have a little spare time get in touch with Deborah, Janet, Sandra or Jacki.

2021 Shows

We are really hoping we can run the Halter Show and or Fleece Show this Autumn 2021
It will all of course all depend on government guidelines so we will let you know if and when we feel we can make plans to put on the shows

In the meantime we are running a “lockdown alpaca” photo competition with prizes so send Deborah or Jacki your best pictures before Easter on the subject and we will have an independent judge pick a winner and runner up to be announced at the AGM

Yorkshire Alpaca Group Show 2019

About Alpacas

Husbandry & Welfare

Alpacas need shelter from the elements, shearing annually in late spring or early summer, a low protein high mineral diet, toes trimming every couple of months and checking at least once a day. Alpacas are easy to halter train once weaned.

Fibre & Products

Alpacas were bred by the Inca’s of Peru for their wonderfully soft and warm fibre. This cashmere-like fleece was once reserved for Incan royalty and is now enjoyed by spinners and weavers everywhere.

The Breeder’s Year

Wean Cria at 6 months old and insert microchips. Register them with the BAS. When conducting monthly checks on your alpacas, as part of the body score look for jaw abscesses and any evidence of mites.

Alpaca Shows

If you are interested in buying alpacas as pets or indeed as a business, there are shows held UK wide to attend for the alpaca experience.

Alpaca Trekking

Alpaca trekking is great way to experience the outdoors, whilst also enjoying some chill time with these fantastic animals.
